A Guedel pattern airway, also known as an oropharyngeal airway (OPA), is a medical device that's used to keep a patient's airway open or maintain it. It's a rigid tube that's inserted through the mouth and into the oropharynx, above the tongue. The curved portion of the tube rests between the tongue and the posterior pharyngeal wall, keeping the epiglottis off the wall. This prevents the tongue from covering the epiglottis, which could stop the person from breathing.
Guedel pattern airways are used when a patient's upper airway is obstructed due to decreased consciousness. When someone becomes unconscious, their jaw muscles relax, which can cause the tongue to block the airway.
Guedel pattern airway sets come in a range of sizes to meet different patient needs. They also include bite blocks to prevent the airway from becoming blocked and to protect against tongue biting
